Call me…MAYBE?

For some people, recording a greeting for their business voicemail gives them the heebies as well as the jeebies. I have met people who have no trouble speaking in front of large audiences, but when it comes to this little recording, their nerves kick in!

While nerves are understandable, your business voicemail message is one of your first impressions to the world, so it’s important to keep it clear, professional, and up to date.

What makes a caller cringe and hang up? Well, there are lots of things, but the most common culprits are:

* Your message is too long or too short.
Callers do not have patience for a long-winded message. You can give them details when you actually speak.
A very short message can sound terse and unfriendly.

* You are hard to understand.
Mumbling or rushing through a message does you no good. If the caller can’t understand you, they will hang up.

An effective voicemail message needs to do a few things:
* State your name or company name to confirm that the caller has reached the right number.
* Very briefly, say that you aren’t available.

* Remind the caller to leave a contact number and identifying information.
* Ask them to state the issue they are calling about as simply and clearly as possible.
* Remind them to look up your website for immediate information.
